Supporting Industry Standards – Our Involvement with Nesta’s Heat Pump Mentoring Scheme

At Option Energy Solutions, we’ve always believed our role goes beyond just installing systems. It’s about doing things properly, raising standards, and helping move the industry forward. That’s why we were really pleased to be invited to speak with Nesta about their new Heat Pump Mentoring Scheme and share our experience supporting other installers.

The Background

As heat pumps become more widely adopted across the UK, the quality of installation is becoming more important than ever. The technology itself is proven, we see that every day, but the results homeowners get can still vary.

From our perspective, that comes down to one thing: confidence.

There are still too many installations out there that don’t perform as they should. Not because installers don’t care, but because they haven’t had the right support or guidance to fully understand the process.

Why This Scheme Matters

Nesta’s mentoring scheme is something we genuinely believe the industry has been missing. It feels like the final piece of the puzzle.

It creates an environment where installers can learn from each other, not just through theory, but through real-world experience. That’s where the real understanding comes from.

From our experience mentoring others, once the fundamentals click, heat loss, system design, flow temperatures, everything else starts to fall into place. At that point, installing heat pumps isn’t complicated. It just becomes a different way of thinking about heating.

Our Perspective

One thing we often say is: when you know, it’s not that hard.

There are plenty of capable engineers in the industry. What’s often missing is that initial bit of support, someone to sense-check the approach, share experience, and build confidence.

That’s exactly what this scheme offers.

If more installers are given that support early on, we’ll see:

Better performing systems
More consistent results for homeowners
Greater confidence in heat pump technology
A stronger industry overall

Looking Ahead

For us, this is about long-term progress. If heat pumps are going to succeed at scale, the standard of installation needs to match the capability of the technology.
