Bringing a Samsung heat pump back from the dead
Samsung air source heat pump repair, service and optimisation visit. Back from the dead! And the customer is now clued up on all things heating.
This Samsung heat pump is around six years old and still covered by Samsung’s seven-year warranty. Getting it fixed took a few rounds with the warranty team, but it’s running well again, and we went back to service it and fine-tune the settings.
At a glance
The Challenge
The heat pump was out of action. Samsung’s technical team diagnosed a faulty inverter PCB, and over the phone they also diagnosed the fan motors. As the unit was still inside its warranty, Samsung covered the parts.
What’s an inverter PCB?
It’s the circuit board that controls the compressor, letting the heat pump speed up and slow down to match the heat your home needs. When it fails, the heat pump can’t run properly.

Our Solution

The repair
We replaced the inverter PCB, then moved on to the fan motors. That’s where it got interesting.
Three deliveries later
Samsung sent the new fan motors but not the impellers, the fan blades that sit on them. The old impellers were seized on, so we asked for new ones. They arrived without the nuts, so it was back on the phone for a third delivery. Once the nuts turned up, it all went back together and worked brilliantly.
Samsung’s diagnosis was spot on. The warranty process was just a bit of a drag.
The service
Once it was running again, we came back to give it a full service. Part of that is inspecting everything.
The insulation on the outside pipework was looking a bit tired, so we’ve quoted to replace it with something better.

The optimisation visit
Samsung heat pumps use what they call water law, which is weather compensation. You set two points on a curve, and the heat pump works out the flow temperature from the outside temperature: warmer water when it is cold outside, cooler water when it is mild.
The house felt good on its current settings, so we kept them.
We’d often set the bottom of the curve lower, around 20°C flow when it’s 20°C outside. Some older models can struggle once the flow temperature drops below about 25°C, so on this one we left it as it was.
Balancing the rooms
Downstairs was running a little warmer than upstairs, which isn’t what the customer wanted. We turned the downstairs flow gauges down and showed the customer how to adjust them, so he can fine-tune it himself.
“It’s a bit of a consultation, and a bit of a rework of the handover process: showing people how to adapt the system to the level they feel comfortable with.”

Why It Matters
A heat pump can often run better with a few tweaks once it’s been in use for a while. Even when the settings are right, as they were here, a service and optimisation visit is a chance to check everything over and make sure you know how to get the best from your system.
