ATAG System Boiler Upgrade in West Sussex

This Sussex-based project was another strong example of how upgrading to a modern system boiler can dramatically improve circulation, usability, and future maintenance, especially in older homes where access is limited.
The existing heat-only boiler had been installed in an awkward, high-up position in front of structural beams, which made the servicing really difficult.
The Challenge
The original installation featured a heat-only boiler paired with two 5.5m head pumps, an arrangement that had been functioning for years, but was beginning to show its age. The boiler’s location in front of timber beams meant that even routine maintenance was problematic.
Our Solution
Following a full on-site assessment, we recommended relocating the boiler to the opposite side of the wall, allowing us to install the new system boiler in a lower, more accessible position while maintaining a vertical flue route through the roof.
We selected a high-efficiency ATAG system boiler for the project. To ensure the system had enough power to circulate through the existing 22mm pipework and multiple zones, we also specified a Wilo Yonos Maxo 7m head pump.
A Flamco hydraulic separator was introduced to provide true hydraulic separation between the boiler and system circuits, helping to improve performance and reduce pressure fluctuation across the network.
Design Decisions
Because the home is used as a second residence, the customer opted not to invest in a full reconfiguration of the controls or the addition of weather compensation and variable temperature circuits. However, we ensured that the existing four-zone setup remained fully compatible with the new boiler, offering consistent temperature control and smooth operation throughout the property.
Although we didn’t undertake a full controls upgrade, the new layout gives the homeowner future flexibility. Should they decide to add smart controls or modify the zone logic later, the system will be ready to support it.
