A Heat Pump Installation for a Young Sussex Couple

Compact Heat Pump Installation in a tight garden space

At Option Energy Solutions, we pride ourselves on finding creative, efficient solutions to even the trickiest installations. One of our recent projects in West Sussex perfectly demonstrates how we combine smart design, reliable technology, and careful planning to deliver high-performing heat pump systems even when space is tight.

The Challenge

Our client, a young couple in their first home, was keen to invest in a sustainable heating system that would lower their energy bills and reduce their environmental impact. They were committed to future-proofing their home but faced a common issue: limited outdoor and indoor space.

Their garden had poorly draining clay soil, and their internal airing cupboard was narrow only 500mm wide. We needed to design a system that would work efficiently within these constraints, without compromising on performance.

Our Solution

We installed a compact yet powerful 3.5kW Vaillant air source heat pump, mounted on a premium base to overcome the drainage issue. This reliable unit fits neatly into the garden space and operates quietly and efficiently year-round.

Inside, we selected a 150-litre Joule Cyclone+ slimline cylinder, paired with all necessary heating accessories. With some clever positioning and planning, the entire setup fit neatly into the restricted cupboard, proving that limited space doesn’t mean limited options.

System Upgrades

To complete the installation and maximise energy efficiency throughout the home, we also:

  • Upgraded the fuse board for added safety and system protection

  • Replaced the electric shower with a thermostatic mains pressure model

  • Installed three new radiators from Stelrad and Purmo to support the open-loop system design at 46°C

These upgrades ensured the heat pump could operate at lower flow temperatures ideal for maximising efficiency and comfort.

Why This Project Stands Out

This installation is a brilliant example of how modern heating systems can be adapted to suit real-world homes. Many people assume they need large gardens or spacious utility rooms to install a heat pump, but as this project proves, that’s not always the case.

By combining our Heat Geek-approved installation skills, advanced design tools, and a personal approach to every job, we were able to deliver a full central heating upgrade that will serve this home for years to come.

Looking Ahead

For the homeowners, this wasn’t just an energy upgrade it was a long-term investment in comfort, sustainability, and energy independence. We’re proud to have helped them take that step, and we’re ready to do the same for others across West Sussex and the surrounding areas.
